CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

The cozy, well-worn diner had the same old, historical look as much of the small town, with its weathered brick exterior and retro neon sign. Inside, patrons' chatter and the grill sizzling filled the establishment. The cracked vinyl booths and chrome accents harkened back to decades past. Despite its aged appearance, the diner remained a popular hotspot, given the crowd filling it on the edge of the dinner hour. They lucked out and found an empty booth in a back corner.

A motherly waitress soon arrived to take their orders. Scarlett chose coffee, a burger, fries, a tuna sandwich, and a slice of apple pie. Once the waitress had delivered the hot mugs and plates and Scarlett deconstructed the sandwich for Runeclaw, they wasted no time diving back into discussing the ley line entity and the guild.

“Some type of spirit being seems the most likely candidate,” Runeclaw mused after swallowing a bite of tuna. “The question is whether they captured it by mistake or if the guild did it intentionally.”

Eli shook his head. “I can’t believe anyone would go that far. Binding another being of power against its will? It’s monstrous.”

Scarlett replied, “We can’t put anything past them. They tried to kidnap you and kill us.” She sipped her coffee. “Mrs. Thorne said they’re obsessed with gathering magic and influence. If imprisoning a powerful spirit gave them more control over the ley line, of course they would do it.”

Maddox added, “From the things you’ve described, the energy surges and the messages seeking help, it sounds like the actions of something caged that’s trying to fight back.”

Runeclaw paused from licking a paw. “You might be right. Whatever the cause, we can’t let its imprisonment continue.”

Eli agreed, “No, we can’t. We can’t let the guild keep doing what it’s doing either. So where do we go from here? Confronting the guild again without more information would probably result in a stalemate at best, especially if they’re drawing upon the entity’s power. It seems like we need to take care of that first.”

Scarlett considered this as she savored a warm bite of apple pie, letting the cinnamon sweetness dissolve on her tongue as her mind turned over strategies. Before she could speak, Runeclaw commented, “You know, you’re supposed to eat the dessert after the other food.”

She frowned at the cat. “Why?”

He blinked. For once, she had asked him something he didn’t have a ready answer for. “Because.”

“That’s stupid.” She took another bite. “Getting back to the important stuff, we need to act before things get worse. To do so, I think we need to learn more, like Eli said.

“We should track the ley line’s energy and search for a pattern or for places where it’s been manipulated. We need to try to communicate with the entity again, probably. If we can pinpoint exactly where the binding draws its power, we could maybe find a way to break it.”

They finished their meal, hammered out the details of their path forward, and headed for Eli’s to sleep.
